In Theaters: June 15, 2018

There are two wide releases this weekend.

Incredibles 2

I actually saw a test screening of this one in November, so this is more than my impressions of the ads this time.

It's funny, because I don't have much to say about it.  If you liked the first one you will like this one.  It has everything the first one had EXCEPT that it's a sequel.  So it doesn't have the same new and different thing going for it.  But being a sequel, that means it has legacy, which is neat.

A lot of the sequences weren't finished yet in the test screening, so I'm eager to see how those turned out.

Incridebles 2 is rated PG for action sequences and some brief mild language.

Tag

Tag is a film based on a real-life group of friends who played the same game of tag well into their adult years.

Tag is rated R for language throughout, crude sexual content, drug use and brief nudity.

In Theaters: June 8, 2018

There are three wide releases this weekend.

Ocean's 8

A reboot?  Not sure.

Here's the thing.  Sandra Bullock and Cate Blanchett can fill the shoes of George Clooney and Brad Pitt.  But that doesn't mean they should.  And it definitely doesn't mean I should care.

The all-female reboot is a fundamentally flawed exercise.  And I'll tell you why.  It's because giving women better roles will never happen if you give them roles that were originally created for men and then tweaked for women.  For heaven's sake, GIVE THEM ORIGINAL ROLES.

Sadly, the idea will live on, as I expect this movie will do anywhere from good to great at the box office.  I can tell you right now it'll do better than that awful Ghostbusters movie did two years ago.  And having not seen either, I will personally guarantee that this will be better as well.

That said, I can't stand Mindy Kaling, so I will be skipping this one.  Also, there is someone acting in this film who is credited as "Awkwafina".  I simply refuse to support any venture from anyone who thinks it's a good idea to go by that name.

Ocean's 8 is rated PG-13 for language, drug use, and some suggestive content.

Hereditary

I wish I could tell you what it's about, but the trailer is just a cornucopia of typical modern horror scenes overlaid with quotes from critics.  But hey, the critics seem to like it!

Seriously, I have no idea.  Something about a dead grandma and all sorts of weird problems.  And maybe she's not dead?  I don't know.

Hereditary is rated R for horror violence, disturbing images, language, drug use and brief graphic nudity.

Hotel Artemis

Drew Pearce's pet project, I'm guessing.

Every now and then a movie comes along that just feels different.  Not good or bad, necessarily, just different.  This reminds me very much of Dredd.

Near future, crime-ridden city, all takes place mostly in one building.  The Hotel Artemis is a hospital for criminals of all kinds.  You check in and get healed, but you're not allowed to bring in guns or kill other patients or staff.  And Jodie Foster runs it.

Hotel Artemis is rated R for violence and language throughout, some sexual references, and brief drug use.
